What is ADA website compliance?

ADA website compliance means a website is accessible to people with disabilities, meeting the standards courts and the Department of Justice have applied under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In practice that almost always means conforming to WCAG 2.1 or 2.2 at Level AA, the technical standard courts and federal guidance use as the benchmark. A compliant website works with screen readers and keyboard-only navigation, meets color contrast requirements, supports zoom and reflow, and provides accessible forms and documents.

Do automated accessibility scans meet ADA requirements?

No. Automated scans catch only a fraction of real accessibility barriers. They miss the issues that drive most lawsuits, the things a real user with a disability would encounter, like inaccessible interactive components, ambiguous link text, broken focus order, and PDFs that screen readers can't read. Many WCAG success criteria can only be evaluated by a human, so manual testing by trained accessibility specialists is what produces genuine compliance and defensible documentation.

Is an accessibility overlay or plugin enough?

No. Accessibility overlays and widgets do not bring a site into ADA compliance, and sites using them have been the subject of their own wave of lawsuits. Overlays cannot reliably fix underlying code issues, can't confirm that a screen reader user can actually complete a transaction, and don't produce the documentation courts look for. An audit and real remediation is the only path to a compliant site.

Does my business need a CASp inspection?

If your business operates a physical location in California, a CASp (Certified Access Specialist) inspection is the strongest legal protection available. A current CASp report makes you a Qualified Defendant under California law, which reduces minimum statutory damages from $4,000 to $1,000 per violation corrected within 60 days, and lets you request a court stay and early evaluation conference if a claim is filed. Outside California, a built-environment ADA survey lets you find and fix barriers before they become a demand letter, which is the best protection federal law allows.

Does the ADA apply to my industry?

Almost certainly yes. The ADA applies to virtually every business that serves the public, from restaurants and retail to healthcare, biotech, and professional services. The barriers we find on a biotech site are the same kinds we find on a restaurant's site, and courts treat them the same way. If customers can visit your website or your location, accessibility obligations apply, regardless of your industry.
